Microsoft: Iranian hackers stalk US politicians

Hackers linked to the Iranian government have infiltrated computers in US political campaigns, officials and media, Microsoft said Friday.

The technology company refused to disclose which political campaign was hacked, citing privacy reasons.

In total, hackers tried to hack 241 accounts and managed to do so in four of them.

Tom Burt, vice president of Microsoft in charge of security, wrote Friday in a blog that the owners of the four infiltrated accounts were notified. Such accounts did not belong to political campaigns or government officials, he said.

He added that the hackings were the work of a group nicknamed "Phosphorous", and that the incident occurred over a period of 30 days between August and September.

The announcement is the most recent indication that foreign governments are trying to intrude into the 2020 presidential elections. US intelligence agencies have been sounding the alarm for months.

In the 2016 elections Russia managed to infiltrate the systems of the Hillary Clinton election campaign, and the issue was the central theme of the investigation led by special prosecutor Robert Mueller.
